Why You Can Trust PantryMatch
๐ Trust built in Local-first, private by default, and built with transparency.
PantryMatch runs entirely in your browser. Recipe parsing, ingredient matching, unit conversion, and dietary flagging are all computed locally. Nothing is sent to us or to any third party. The only network request is license verification to Gumroad when you enter a key — no pantry, recipe, or shopping data is included.
Battle-tested logic
Quantity parsing tested against 6 scenarios. Unit conversion tested against 5 scenarios. Name matching tested across 5 scenarios including plural/singular and strict modes.
Transparent matching
Every match shows Have/Partial/Missing status with coverage percentage. The formula is simple and visible — you can see exactly why an ingredient was matched or not.
100% local storage
Your pantry, meal plan, and history stay on your device until you delete them or uninstall.
No hidden data collection
Minimal permissions — only storage, scripting, and activeTab. No telemetry.
Key Benefits
Detailed Feature Explanations
1. Recipe Auto-Parsing
What it does: Automatically extracts ingredients, recipe name, and servings from any recipe page. Uses Schema.org structured data (the same data most recipe sites embed for Google's Rich Results) as the primary method, with an HTML fallback for sites without it.
What's extracted:
- Recipe name — from the JSON-LD or page title
- Servings — number of servings the recipe yields
- Ingredients — each ingredient's name, quantity, unit, and notes (e.g., "divided," "to taste")
Raw ingredient: "1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, divided"
Parsed: quantity=1.5, unit=cup, name=all-purpose flour, notes=divided
2. Pantry Matching
What it does: Compares each recipe ingredient against your pantry and reports the status:
- ✓ Have — you have enough of the ingredient
- ◐ Partial — you have some, but not enough
- ✗ Need to buy — you don't have it at all
formula Coverage = (Have Ingredients / Total Ingredients) × 100%
Recipe needs: 2 cups milk, 3 eggs, 1 cup flour
Pantry has: 500 ml milk, 2 eggs, 2 cups flour
2 cups milk = 473 ml → you have 500 ml → ✓ Have
3 eggs needed, 2 have → ◐ Partial
1 cup flour needed, 2 have → ✓ Have
Coverage: 2/3 = 67%
3. Servings Scaling
What it does: Adjust the recipe to any number of servings. All ingredient quantities update in real-time, and the match status recalculates instantly.
Why it matters: Recipes rarely match the number of people you're cooking for. Scale up for a crowd or down for one without doing the math yourself.
4. Substitution Suggestions
What it does: For any missing ingredient, click "Suggest substitution" to get an alternative ingredient you might already have.
- Curated database — 15+ common substitutions (buttermilk, heavy cream, baking powder, eggs, and more) from established culinary reference conversions
- AI-assisted — with your own Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, or Grok key, the suggestion considers the ingredient's actual role in the recipe (binding, moisture, leavening, flavor)
Buttermilk → 1 cup milk + 1 tbsp lemon juice or vinegar (let sit 5 min)
Egg → 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce, or 1 tbsp ground flaxseed + 3 tbsp water
Heavy cream → 3/4 cup milk + 1/4 cup melted butter
5. Grocery List
What it does: Generates a grocery list of only the ingredients you're missing. Copy it to your clipboard or share it with others (Pro).
Why it matters: No more buying ingredients you already have. Shop smarter, reduce waste, and save money.
6. Meal Planner (Pro)
What it does: Add multiple recipes to a meal plan and get one merged, deduplicated shopping list across all of them. Ingredients with the same name and compatible units are combined.
Why it matters: Plan an entire week of meals at once. No more duplicate items on separate lists — everything you need is merged into one comprehensive list.
Recipe 1: 2 cups milk · 3 eggs · 1 cup flour
Recipe 2: 1 cup milk · 2 eggs · 2 cups flour
Merged: 3 cups milk · 5 eggs · 3 cups flour
7. Dietary Filters (Pro)
What it does: Flags ingredients in your recipe matches against five dietary profiles:
- Gluten-Free — wheat, flour, barley, rye, bread, pasta, couscous, breadcrumb, soy sauce
- Dairy-Free — milk, butter, cheese, cream, yogurt, whey, ghee
- Nut-Free — almond, walnut, pecan, cashew, pistachio, hazelnut, peanut, nut
- Vegan — milk, butter, cheese, cream, egg, honey, meat, chicken, beef, pork, fish, gelatin
- Keto — sugar, flour, rice, pasta, bread, potato, corn
Honest framing: This is a starting point for review, not a guaranteed or exhaustive safety system. A real allergy decision needs the actual product label, not a browser extension's keyword match. This is stated plainly in the UI.
8. Batch Pantry Import (Pro)
What it does: Paste a list of pantry items (one per line) or a CSV with columns for name, quantity, and unit. Add dozens of items at once instead of one by one.
9. Shopping List History (Pro)
What it does: Saves every shopping list you generate (from the Meal Planner or a single-recipe grocery list) with a timestamp. Review past lists or clear your history entirely.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Fix: Dietary filters use keyword-based flagging — they're a starting point for review, not a guaranteed safety system. Always verify against the actual product label for real allergy decisions. This is stated plainly in the UI.
Fix: The extension only works on normal web pages (http:// or https://). Browser internal pages can't be read by extensions.
Fix: AI-assisted substitutions require your own Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, or Grok key. Without a key, the extension falls back to the curated substitution database (15+ common substitutions).
- ⚠️ Strict vs. Lenient matching: Lenient matches partial name overlaps (e.g., "chicken" matches "chicken breast"). Strict requires a closer match.
- ⚠️ Unit categories: Volume (cups, ml) and weight (g, oz) units are never merged — different categories are kept separate in the meal planner's merged shopping list.
- ⚠️ Shareable lists: Shared lists are copied to your clipboard as plain text for pasting into any messaging app — there's no server or link generation involved.
A Note on Accuracy
Recipe parsing uses Schema.org/JSON-LD structured data as the primary method (the same data most recipe sites embed for Google's Rich Results). For sites without structured data, it falls back to common HTML ingredient-list patterns. The fallback is a best-effort extraction and may not work perfectly on every site.
Quantity parsing handles plain fractions, unicode vulgar fractions, mixed numbers, and ranges. Tested against 6 scenarios before shipping. Non-numeric quantities like "to taste" are handled gracefully — they're flagged as "have" based on presence alone since quantity doesn't matter.
Unit conversion uses standard, well-established conversion factors (base units: ml for volume, g for weight). Tested against 5 scenarios before shipping. When different unit categories are compared (volume vs. weight), the extension assumes presence is enough rather than falsely flagging missing.
Dietary flagging uses conservative, keyword-based matching. It is framed honestly as a starting point for review, not a guaranteed or exhaustive safety system. A real allergy decision needs the actual product label, not a browser extension's keyword match.
AI-assisted substitutions require your own API key. Without a key, substitutions come from a curated database of well-known culinary conversions (buttermilk, heavy cream, baking powder, eggs, and others). The curated database is intentionally conservative — a useful starting set, not a claim of exhaustive coverage.
Batch import parsing supports CSV with a header row, plain comma-separated paste, or bare names with no quantity/unit. Blank lines are skipped. Tested against 5 scenarios before shipping.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this extension really free?
Yes. Every core feature works fully for free, forever — unlimited recipe parsing, pantry matching, servings scaling, substitutions, and grocery lists. Pro ($9 one-time) adds meal planner, dietary filters, shareable lists, batch import, and shopping history.
How does the recipe parsing work?
PantryMatch reads Schema.org/JSON-LD structured data from the recipe page (the same data most recipe sites embed for Google's Rich Results). If that's not present, it falls back to common HTML ingredient-list patterns. It extracts recipe name, servings, and each ingredient's name, quantity, unit, and notes.
What websites does this work on?
It works on any recipe website that uses standard structured data or common ingredient-list markup — including Allrecipes, Food Network, BBC Good Food, Tasty, and thousands of food blogs. The fallback HTML extraction covers most popular recipe plugins (WP Recipe Maker, Tasty Recipes, and others).
How accurate are the dietary filters?
Dietary filters use keyword-based flagging — they're a starting point for review, not a guaranteed safety system. Always verify against the actual product label for real allergy decisions. This is stated plainly in the UI.
What happens if I uninstall the extension?
All data (pantry, meal plan, history, settings, license) is removed from your browser. If you have a Pro license, you can re-enter your key after reinstalling to restore access.
Is Pro a subscription or one-time?
Pro is a one-time purchase — $9, pay once, keep forever. No recurring subscription.
